Itchy Feet: Causes and Prevention

by GlobalBees Brand pvt ltd 10 Sep 2022

If you suffer from itchy feet, you're not alone. Itchy feet are a common complaint, and there are many potential causes. Itchiness on the feet is a common problem with many different causes. In most cases, itchy feet are not severe and can be treated at home with self-care measures. However, some medical conditions can cause itchy feet, so it is essential to see a healthcare provider if the itchiness is accompanied by other symptoms or does not improve with self-care.

Causes:

Itchy feet are a common problem that various things can cause. Sometimes itchy feet simply signify that your feet are dry and need to be moisturized. Other times, they can be caused by an underlying medical condition.

There are many potential causes of itchy feet, including dry skin, athlete's foot, and psoriasis. In most cases, itchy feet can be remedied with simple self-care measures, such as keeping the feet clean and well-moisturized. However, more severe cases may require treatment from a healthcare provider.

Allergies:

If you have allergies, you may experience itchy feet as a symptom. Allergies can be triggered by environmental factors like pollen or specific food items (for example: seafood). If you suspect allergies  cause your itchy feet or any serious foot infection talk to your doctor about possible treatments.

Athlete's foot:

Athlete's foot is a fungal infection that commonly affects the skin between the toes. This condition can cause itching, redness, and scaling of the skin. If you have athlete's foot, you should see your doctor for treatment. You may need to use an antiseptic cream or take oral antifungal medication.

Dry skin:

If your feet are dry, they may itch. This happens if you live in a dry climate or don't drink enough water. To help relieve dry, itchy feet, moisturize them regularly. You can also try using a humidifier in your home to add moisture to the air.

Dry skin is another common cause of itchy feet. If your feet are exposed to harsh chemicals or hot water frequently, this can lead to dryness and itchiness. If your feet are dry and irritated, try using moisturizing cream or lotion.

Dermatitis:

Another possible cause of itchy feet is contact dermatitis. This happens when your skin comes into contact with irritants, like certain soaps, detergents, or even jewelry. To treat contact dermatitis, avoid using whatever is irritating.

Eczema:

This chronic skin condition is characterized by dry, itchy skin. Eczema can affect any area of the body, including the feet.

Wearing synthetic materials:

Sweaters and socks made of wool or synthetic materials can also cause itchy feet. These materials can irritate the skin and cause itchiness. There are many effective treatments for itchy feet, depending on the underlying cause.

Symptoms:

  • blisters
  • cracked and open areas
  • dry and flaky skin
  • rash and redness
  • sudden inflammation
  • white spots
  • swelling

Prevention:

Several home remedies can help relieve itchy feet. These include soaking your feet in warm water, using a foot cream or lotion, and wearing socks made of natural fibers. You can also try over-the-counter anti-itch creams or ointments, and anti-septic powders. If your feet continue to itch, you should see a doctor rule out other possible causes, such as allergies or fungal infections.

Here are some home remedies for itchy feet:

Maintain foot hygiene:

Basic cleaning and maintaining hygiene are the key to prevent and cure itchy feet. Dirty and sweaty feet often lead to itching and become a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. Wash your feet every day before going to bed. Then, Pat gently with a towel to dry and apply some anti-fungal foot powder like Dr foot's antibacterial and antiseptic foot powder. This antiseptic and non-toxic powder reduces bacteria, itchiness, and odor and leaves a refreshing minty fragrance.

Massage with Essential oils:

Menthol is a member of the mint family and is famous for its cooling properties. In addition, massaging with lemon essential oil increases blood circulation and relieves foot pain. Peppermint essential oil is especially recommended for pregnant women because it contains menthol. During pregnancy, most women can have immense foot pain or itchiness because they also carry the baby's weight. A professional foot massage with essential oils twice or thrice a week will help them eliminate pain, dry skin, or infection.

Caution: Don't put essential oils directly on your skin; it might cause reactions. Try to dilute with any carrier oil: coconut, jojoba, almond, or olive oil.

Wet Wrap Therapy:

Wet Wrap Therapies, or WWT, might sound a little complicated, but it is a simple process of wrapping a damp cloth around the itchy area for some time. You can also use plant-based foot soaks before sleeping. These wraps hydrate your feet and soothe the skin. You can also try applying some aloe vera gel afterward because it is an anti-inflammatory ingredient.

Process:

  • Moist gauze or a soft cloth in warm water until it becomes damp.
  • Wrap it around the itchy area.
  • Wrap a dry piece of gauze over the wet one.
  • Leave it overnight.

Oatmeal scrub:

Scrubbing and exfoliating your feet can also help reduce itching. Oatmeal scrub contains a lot of antioxidants also it is also a natural exfoliating agent. Sometimes dead cells can also cause itchy skin; scrubbing at least twice a week will eliminate dead cells and stimulate cell regeneration.

Process:

  • Grind a cup of oatmeal and mix with warm water.
  • Dip your feet in the mixture for a while and start rubbing the heels with a pumice stone.
  • Rinse well; ensure no residues are left.
  • Apply cream or lotion before naptime.

Avoid irritants:

During pedicure sessions, people sometimes use chemical shampoos or soap, which can cause itchy feet. The basic cleaning should start with hot water and Epsom salt soak. You can add your favorite essential oils to enhance the experience.
